Extbase Variable Dump'Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Wurst (Emeritus) of Excellence was Director of the Instit
ute of Developmental Genetics (IDG) at the Helmholtz Zentrum München (HMGU)
in Neuherberg and chair-holder at the Technical University Munich (TUM) unti
l December 2024. Since September 2009 he was also Partner of the DZNE (Germa
n Centre of Neurodegenerative Diseases), Site Munich, Germany.<br />Before h
e was appointed to his current positions at HMGU and TUM in 2002, he was gro
up leader of the group ‘Molecular Neurogenetics’ at the Max-Planck-Institute
of Psychiatry in Munich and Junior Research Group Leader at the Department
of Mammalian Genetics, Helmholtz Munich. Prof. Dr. Wurst studied Biology/Che
mistry at the University of Freiburg, Germany, obtained his PhD (summa cum l
aude) at the University of Göttingen, Germany, in 1988, and continued with p
ost-doctoral training at the University Göttingen (1988-1989) and the Samuel
Lunefeld Research Institute of the Mount Sinai Hospital, Division of Molecu
lar and Developmental Biology, Toronto, Canada (1989-1994; headed by Prof. A
. Joyner).<br />He has longstanding expertise in the development and applica
tion of novel gene editing technologies for in vivo gene function annotation
(gene trapping, gene targeting, RNA Interference, TAL-effector nucleases, Z
inc-finger-nucleases, CRISPR/Cas) and therapeutic applications (somatic gene
repair). In this context he was among others coordinator of the European Co
nditional Mouse Mutagenesis Program (EUCOMM/EUCOMMTools) and is founding mem
ber of the International Mouse Knockout Consortium (IKMC) of which he was pr
esident in 2010/11.<br />Furthermore, he focuses on the generation and analy
sis of new human cellular and tissue models as well as animal models for neu
rological (Dementias, Parkinson’s disease, ALS) and psychiatric diseases (Ma
